Question About the Regions of Italy?

I know the Italian language has many different dialects, usually based on which region of Italy you are from. The Neapolitan dialect is different than the Sicilian one. My question is, with standard Italian, the kind you are tought in schools, is that specific to a certain region, or does every region speak a different variation, thanks.
